BBC TV’s film about a nuclear attack on Britain

Peter Watkins' controversial and harrowing depiction of the effects of a nuclear attack on England hit the headlines when it was banned on the grounds of being too graphic and horrifying. It single-handedly opened up the nuclear debate and went on to theatrical success on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite winning an Oscar, two Society of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards and a Special Prize at the Venice Film Festival, The War Game remained unshown on British television for more than 20 years.
